Walnut Creek, CA was settled by Americans following the end of the US Mexican war. Named after a native species of walnut found in proliferation in the area, the first building was a hotel that opened in 1855. It was first used for settlers to the area, and was soon joined by a blacksmith shop and the ever mandatory general store. The area did not really begin to prosper until the railroad arrived in 1891 which allowed settlers to arrive in significant numbers.

Incorporated in 1914, Walnut Creek was the 8th city to join Contra Costa County. The railroad was active in Walnut Creek until the late 1970’s. When the railroad ceased running, it left miles of existing railroad tracks that were eventually turned into the Iron Horse Trail, a well-developed trail used by hikers, bicyclists, pedestrians and runners. The first retail center of record was opened in 1951, and the Walnut Creek of today is a growing city and a significant addition to Contra Costa County.
