Asphalt Paving – Types of Damage
There’s a reason we use asphalt paving for many of our public roads. It offers a smooth drive with improved fuel consumption and reduced noise. It is also quick to repair so minimizing traffic disruption.

Asphalt Paving – Types of Cracks
Slippage cracks – paving contractors create asphalt paving by layering asphalt on top of base courses. If the bond between the layers isn’t strong enough, the mix will start to slip and form what looks like stretch marks.
Alligator cracks – often the result of overloading, this type of cracking is also known as fatigue cracking.
Block cracking – cracks form geometrically in the shape of rectangles that join. If the mix was not wet enough when laid, temperature changes will cause the material to expand and contract. This causes block cracking on the asphalt paving.
Edge cracks – unsupported edging and plant growth cause these types of cracks.
Longitudinal cracks – run lengthways down the paving. It is caused by poor construction.
Traverse cracks – run across the paving from edge to edge. The source of these cracks is in the base layers.
Cracks can be filled by pouring hot sealant into them to prevent any further damage. The sealing keeps water and other contaminants out.
