Clayton, CA was not incorporated as a city until 1964, but started out as an early settlement in the late 1850’s. Named after Joel Clayton, the city is located at the base of Mt. Diablo State Park. Mr. Clayton established the area’s first winery on a 30 acre vineyard, and it was so successful that it encouraged others to follow suit. These vineyards today are famous for the quality of their wines.

The oldest commercial establishment for Clayton was the Clayton Club Saloon built in 1873. Located on what is now known as their Main Street, it has gone through many changes including an ice cream parlor and a hotel and a saloon. Surviving both the great depression and prohibition, it is still open for business today.
